Legislation Would Provide Additional Tools To Fight ID Theft

A package of bills to fight the rapidly growing crime of identity theft in Washington is successfully moving through the committee process in the House of Representatives, reported its sponsor, Rep. Dan Roach.

With assistance and recommendations from the LEGIT Task Force (Law Enforcement Group Against Identity Theft), Roach introduced five ID theft bills. The 31st District lawmaker said it is important that the Legislature move forward during the 2007 session to provide the tools necessary to address identity theft.

"This is an exploding issue in Washington. Identity theft victims are revictimized year after year and their financial lives are turned upside down. Ruined credit affects marriages, children, and the ability to get ahead financially. The damage that could be caused by a crime like this is equal to or greater than other crimes because it is so devastating to the victims," said Roach, R-Bonney Lake. "Our laws are not set up to handle the enormity of this crime. That's why I want to attack it with this package of ID theft legislation."

The House Judiciary Committee took testimony Tuesday on the first measure in the package to be considered, House Bill 1275. The measure would require out-of-state recipients of Washington criminal warrants and subpoenas to produce records in criminal investigations and prosecutions. Read more at wa.gov.
